MassDEP releases proposed regulation for CSO notifications

October 08, 2021 1:58 PM | Suzanne Hatch (Administrator)

Full, prompt disclosure of discharges of raw sewage into rivers and bays from "combined sewer overflows" will make even more clear where we need to #InvestInWaterMA and upgrade our critical water and sewer infrastructure. As reported in this Lowell Sun article, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection is proposing to implement new regulations in January 2022 to require sewer system operators to disclose CSO discharges within 2 hours of when they are first discovered and notify the public about the location, amount of discharge, and water and land areas potentially affected. We encourage you to visit: mass.gov/eea/agencies/massdep/news/comment to learn more--and to make your voice heard on this important effort to protect public health, water resources, and our environment!
